When you think of Kootwijk, you immediately think of Radio Kootwijk. The monumental radio building called the Sphinx is the face of this beautiful village. In the past, (the area around) the building was used as a broadcasting station for contact with the Dutch East Indies. A visit to Radio Kootwijk briefly takes you back to those times. There are still regular guided tours of this striking building. In autumn, there is the romantic winter evening walk along the routes around the building. And inside, the architecture with elements from the Art Deco style and the Amsterdam School style forms a magnificent backdrop for various performances or gatherings.
But we are doing Kootwijk a disservice if we only talk about Radio Kootwijk. The stunning nature also deserves full attention! After all, the village is situated between vast heathlands and the largest active sand drifts in Western Europe. While cycling or hiking, you really imagine yourself in a fairytale landscape. And you might even spot a wild bison or red deer.
In the summer, Kootwijk becomes the place to be during Theater op ‘t Zand. A small-scale festival full of music, theatre, cabaret acrobatics and more. All in the midst of the overwhelming nature of Kootwijk.
